Room 512, Tuesday Morning

"Gnghghghghhhh," Edward said intelligibly, to the sun.

"Nrghghglkjgk," he added, a minute later. The sun continued to behave irrationally regardless.

"Mghghk," he sighed. The sun made a point of jabbing him repeatedly in the eyeballs.

He yanked the blankets over his head. It seemed like a sound compromise.

[[ ... can be open, yes. don't drink pan-galactic gargle blasters, children! ]]

Edward had meant to yell 'I'm alive! Please, go!'.

It came out as a distinctly garbled noise that could've been anything.

"Well then, since I haven't an idea what you just said, I shall take that to mean I ought to come check on you after all," Cosette informed him, and tried the doorknob to find that it was open.

So she let herself in, shut the door quietly behind her, and stood over the bed with an expression that tried for disapproving but mostly looked indulgent, if perplexed.

"What am I to do with you?" she asked, laughing softly. "I've brought you something to drink, in any case."

A pause.

"Something that is most certainly not whatever it is you had yesterday."

Edward squinted up at her with the one eye visible underneath the sheets. "'s it got alcohol in it?" he said. Vaguely understandably.

"It does not," replied Cosette, who was not familiar with the whole 'hair of the dog' concept. She opened the bag and took out one of the bottles of water, holding it out for inspection. "From the look of you, you had enough to last you a week as it is."

"Sometimes 's helps," Edward said.

He pushed his head out of of the blankets and immediately regretted it. "Ow."

"Perhaps, but you don't look as if it would help today." Cosette peered down at him. "I meant to tell you how displeased I am with you for letting yourself get taken by aliens --" for as much as she was putting on an indignant air, she didn't sound in the least as if she was actually angry -- "but it seems as if that would only make your head hurt worse. So it's a very good job you did, monsieur, of avoiding that lecture for the time being."

She stopped pretending to be upset and bit her lip. "Are you going to be all right? Is there anything you need?"

"Sun," Edward mumbled, "Make go 'way."

He was not above making use of that offer, no.

"I don't know how much I can do about that, but I'll try," Cosette said, and left the bottle of water by the bed while she went to busy herself closing any curtains or blinds or what have you. "I'm not convinced the sun's likely to be persuaded to leave and come back a bit later."

With the curtains closed, Edward could at least exhale a sigh of relief. "'s a terrible thing, the sun," he said, "Most pernicious." Beat. "Perifidious?"

Cosette laughed. "Both might apply, in this case, as it's betrayed you by causing you pain, hmm?"

"It has indeed," Edward sighed. "Very cruel."

"I am very disappointed in it, then." Cosette shook her head dramatically, then settled herself on the floor by the bed. "Was it at least good, the drink with the funny name?"

"You know," Edward said, and settled on his back, his arm draped over his forehead. "I can't really remember?"

"So it was either that bad or that good," Cosette guessed. "Though I must admit I'm not sure which, considering your sorry state this morning."

"'s good, most likely," Edward said, squinting up at the ceiling. "Never felt this bad after one that wasn't good."

He'd remember he wasn't wearing anything (barring the sheets) at some point, but right now he was too miserable to really think about it.

. . . yes, this was exactly the sort of thing that wouldn't occur to Cosette.

"Then I'll just have to be glad you enjoyed yourself, though I'm not sure I understand why it's worth it to feel this badly afterward."

Not judging! Just genuinely not sure.

"'m not too sure about it at the moment, myself," Edward sighed. "It'll come back to me, I'm sure."

He looked towards her. "...you brought things."

"Yes." Cosette laughed. "It's good that you noticed. I had a suspicion you might not be feeling at your best this morning, and thought something to drink might help."

NOT THAT KIND OF DRINK, EDWARD.

"You are entirely too good to me," Edward proclaimed, shifting under the sheets as he tried to block out whatever sunlight remained.

"Perhaps it's entirely in my own best interest to do so," replied Cosette, as if this was at all accurate. "Who will I persuade to climb trees with me, and the like, otherwise?"

"I'm sure you'd have the lads lining up to scramble around branches with you," Edward said. He cracked a smile; laughter was still beyond him.

"It would hardly be the same thing -- oh good, you're smiling, at least," Cosette noted. "A promising sign of life."

"This isn't my first," Edward said, "Though it's doing its damnedest to be my worst."

"I shall be highly disappointed in you if you let something like this defeat you," Cosette said lightly. "Luckily, I have more faith in you than that."
